Fly.io vs Railway
Compare categories, runtimes, pricing, regions, infrastructure, and platform trade-offs.
Updated
Which should you choose?
Consider Fly.io when the application needs explicit control over Machines, their regions, and the way individual instances start, stop, or communicate. Consider Railway when you want to deploy services, workers, and databases through a managed project workflow with fewer instance-level choices.
Both support containerized applications. The difference is not simply whether you can deploy Docker, but how much of the compute placement and lifecycle you want to manage.
Machine placement versus project services
Fly.io runs applications on Fly Machines and exposes machine-level controls, regional placement, and private networking between application instances. Railway organizes infrastructure into services inside projects, with deployment, environment, and networking workflows centered on those services. Neither choice removes the need to plan data locality and resilience for a stateful workload. Fly Machines · Railway documentation
The two bills measure different things
Started Fly Machines are billed by their provisioned compute resources over time, with stopped Machines and persistent storage having different charging rules. Railway charges for consumed CPU and memory alongside storage and networking, subject to its subscription tier and included usage. The lowest advertised starting amount is not a reliable cost comparison for an always-on API or a worker that scales down between jobs. Fly.io pricing · Railway pricing
Database operations remain a separate choice
Fly.io offers Managed Postgres as well as infrastructure for applications that run their own persistent services. Railway can provision a PostgreSQL database service alongside an app; its high availability and recovery options require configuration. Compare the database service and its recovery needs separately from where the application containers run. Fly.io Managed Postgres · Railway PostgreSQL
Decision boundary: Prefer Fly.io when machine placement and instance behavior are central to the design. Prefer Railway when the project-level service workflow is more valuable. Price the actual instance or service configuration rather than treating the two billing models as interchangeable.
