What is Knative?

Knative is a Kubernetes-native platform for deploying and managing serverless workloads. It was originally started by Google in partnership with IBM, Red Hat, and SAP, and has since become a graduated project under the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF).

Knative consists of two main components: Serving and Eventing. Serving handles request-driven compute that can scale to zero, while Eventing provides a standardized way to route and handle asynchronous events. Together they give Kubernetes clusters a full serverless runtime without vendor lock-in.

Because Knative runs on any conformant Kubernetes cluster, it works on-premises, in the cloud, or on a developer laptop. Several managed Kubernetes providers include Knative as a built-in option, making it one of the most widely deployed open source serverless platforms.
