Prisma Postgres Pricing, Features & Alternatives

Runtime Platform · DBaaS

Managed PostgreSQL with operation-based billing, automatic scaling, and built-in connection pooling.

Prisma Postgres is a managed PostgreSQL 17 database that charges for operations and storage rather than requiring customers to size a compute instance. It automatically adjusts database capacity and provides pooled and direct PostgreSQL connections. Prisma ORM is optional: applications can connect with standard PostgreSQL clients, or use an HTTP/WebSocket driver in environments without TCP access.
Best for

Applications with variable query traffic that need managed PostgreSQL without sizing compute instances, especially when database provisioning should follow Prisma Compute deployments.

Watch out for

Query-heavy applications can accumulate operation charges even when queries are cheap to execute; Prisma bills reads and writes equally, including health-check queries.

Prisma Plans

Primary Pricing

Workspace plans include Prisma Postgres operations and storage; database usage beyond included allowances is metered. Prisma Compute is priced separately within the shared plan.

Free

$0

Hard-capped free database allowance; no payment card required.

  • 200,000 database operations per month
  • 2 GB storage per workspace
  • Up to 50 databases
Starter

$10/month

Base monthly plan with usage overages.

  • 1 million database operations included per month
  • 10 GB storage included
  • Up to 1,000 databases
Pro

$49/month

Higher database allowances and lower operation/storage overages.

  • 10 million database operations included per month
  • 50 GB storage included
  • Up to 1,000 databases
Business

$129/month

Expanded allowances, backup retention, and regulated-workload features.

  • 50 million database operations included per month
  • 100 GB storage included
  • Up to 1,000 databases
Prisma Postgres overages Additional Usage Cost

An operation is a database interaction, not an HTTP request or affected row. Reads and writes cost the same, including health checks such as SELECT 1, regardless of execution time. Direct SQL and Prisma Client count operations differently; storage overages are separate, and database transfer is included.

ResourceBilling UnitPrice
Database operations (Starter)per million operations above allowance$8

Storage (Business)per GB above allowance$1.00

Free Tier

No card required

Permanent Free plan. Usage is hard capped rather than charged as overage. Free allowances are workspace-wide.

  • Database operations: 200,000 operations per month
  • Database storage: 2 GB per workspace
  • Databases: 50 databases per workspace

Enterprise Pricing

Prisma offers custom pricing for higher-volume teams.

Paid plans have a monthly base fee plus metered overages; all plans include database transfer.

Infrastructure & Availability

Where workloads run, how deployment is scoped, and what underlying infrastructure the platform depends on.

Prisma Postgres databases are created in one selected region, which cannot be changed in place. Changing regions requires a new database and data migration. This inventory covers database placement, not Prisma Compute availability.

FAQ

Do I have to use Prisma ORM with Prisma Postgres?
No. Prisma Postgres works with standard PostgreSQL clients, including psql, Drizzle, and Kysely. Prisma ORM is optional, and runtimes without TCP access can use the Prisma Postgres serverless driver.
Are Prisma Postgres preview databases copies of production?
No. When Prisma Compute deploys a branch preview, each database declared by its Composer module is a new, isolated Prisma Postgres database without production data. It can receive application migrations, but it is not a copy-on-write clone of production.
What happens when the Prisma Postgres Free plan reaches its monthly operations limit?
The database stops accepting read and write requests when the Free plan’s monthly operations allowance is exhausted; the data is not deleted. You can upgrade, wait for the next monthly reset, or use a one-time 24-hour grace period per workspace to export data or arrange an upgrade. The grace period does not renew each month.
Can Prisma Postgres restore a database to an exact point in time?
Not yet, as of the November 2026 documentation review. Paid plans support daily snapshots on days with database activity, kept for 7 days on Starter and Pro or 30 days on Business. Point-in-time recovery is documented as forthcoming rather than currently available.
